Hero: Michael Oreskovic
Have you ever met someone and said to yourself, “I wish I was a little more like that person”? Someone who you really get the feeling of greatness from? There are few feelings that feel as good as being around great people!
I only know about Michael Oreskovic what I learned about him from watching his CSPAN interview, and from the blog his dad kept up about him. If you google his name, you’ll find people posting about how they were also blown away by his interview, and conservative websites talking about how he’s a complete stud. If he hadn’t have gotten injured serving us over in Iraq, I never would have learned what kind of guys are serving our country right now.
Learn about Michael Oreskovic.
Here is what I learned about and from Michael Oreskovic. He was smart. He had smart answers that weren’t filled with unnecessary machoism or bravado. He seemed polite, motivated, thoughtful (the things were thoughtful, not just filler stuff), he seemed like the kind of soldier that are the reason that people look up to soldiers.
The other day while on a plane flight home, I sat next to an Air Force ROTC that starts his Senior year at OU in Fall. I sat down, ready to keep myself entertained for the 3.5 hours from Memphis(layover) to SLC. This cleancut guy actually introduces himself with a handshake as I’m sitting down. Says his name, asks me mine. Without recalling every single detail which I’ve since forgotten since the trip ten days ago, let me tell you this: The guy was polite, we talked about why he was in ROTC and chose Air Force, talked about his plans for the future, his fiance, talked about the benefits of the service and how he was stoked because he gets to be a pilot (he’d just received notice that he’s going to fly, he just doesn’t know yet where he’ll train, etc.)
When we got off the plane, he shook my hand again. Wished me luck, and him too. Just knew that he was a great guy, and I was happy to have sat next to him.
Thinking about him reminded me of Michael’s interview last year. Michael is a hero, and just like the guy on the plane, it just feels good that there are people like this out there! People that don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk!
