Let me say that for the last ten years, I really haven’t been “in shape” but I was running 5k during each lunchtime about a year ago. I was 15 pounds lighter, but on the other hand, I was on the Atkins diet, which… I’m supposing would be crazy to run since I didn’t have any sugars or carbs at all, so I’d think that this time should be better for me, right? But when I started running 5ks for each lunch, I was also dead by the end of them (maybe the Atkins?) and I’d also started running them after I was already in the habit of walking 2-3 miles a day.
On Friday I went, after buying my shoes on Thursday night (this place is called 26.2, it’s in AF near Sunrise Family Video. They video tape you running for a bit and then watch it and look for pronation or whatever and help recommend the type of shoe. They were AWESOME.) So I went to run Friday and ended up running 3 minutes, walked 2, ran 2, walked 3, ran 2, walked several, ran 2, walked several. I did about 3.5 miles in 40-45 minutes.
Today as soon as I started running my shins hurt, which I’m assuming is from starting to run the other day, plus my weight. I ran a quarter mile, walked a quarter mile, ran a quarter mile, walked 2-3 laps, then ran a quarter mile, then walked for like 15 minutes, heart beating crazy the whole time after that.
If a person can become bedridden and lose their muscles to atrophy in as little as 10 days, of course the muscles and any endurance I’d built up over a year ago running or even just being active would also have atrophied away.
So I just have to keep running.
